Something published in the popular press is something anyone should be able to read and understand, such as a popular magazine, like Time, or a newspaper, such as The New York Times.  The two other major types of publications are scholarly (also called academic or peer-reviewed) and trade publications (which are published with a particular audience in mind, usually a particular industry, but not a scholarly audience.)
